International Standards

Clinical psychology is a vital part of mental health service provision to the public. ACPA recognises the requirement for clinical psychology in Australia to meet the highest contemporary, internationally recognised standards and actively works to achieve this for the benefit of the public and our members.

Education

ACPA provides and promotes ongoing training and learning of best practices within clinical psychology and other mental health professions to enhance services provided to the public.

Specialist Recognition

ACPA supports recognition of clinical psychology as a clearly identifiable area of expertise in mental health and works to gain specialist recognition for clinical psychologists with internationally aligned accredited post-graduate qualifications, in order for this expertise to be identified.

Representation

ACPA advocates to government, professional and academic organisations, other health professions, and the public about standards of mental health practice. ACPA also aims to promote to these bodies the benefits provided by the expertise of qualified clinical psychologists.

10 Best Modems for Xfinity10 Best Modems for Xfinity

This modem gets a special mention because it’s one of the only retail modems to support Xfinity Voice, the telephone service featured in the Triple Play package. That being said, when it comes to the price value of Arris equipment, their SVG2482AC telephony modem is at the bottom of the pack.

The modem options for Comcast users are severely limited by the Triple Play, but this Residential Gateway can help make the deal work on your terms.

This modem is capable of download speeds up to 1 Gbps. It includes an AC-band WiFi router to project your wireless network through your home. There is no modem-only version of this product so if you already have your own router that you’d rather use, you will have to bridge it to the built-in router.

The embedded router performs pretty well, though, which is good considering that the placement of your home phone lines might limit where you can place your modem-router. The SVG2482AC has four ethernet ports, two USB ports for network-attached storage, and it can support two simultaneous voice lines.

Even with the higher price of this unit, you will still be saving money by making the switch from a rented unit, especially if you had to sign a multi-year contract with your ISP.

Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access pointsRecommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points

For the best security, performance and reliability, we recommend using these settings for all Wi-Fi routers, base stations or access points used with Apple products.

This article is primarily for network administrators and other people who manage their own network. If you’re trying to join a Wi-Fi network, one of these articles should help:

About privacy and security warnings
If your Apple device displays a privacy warning or warning about the weak security of a Wi-Fi network, that network could expose information about your device. Apple recommends connecting to Wi-Fi networks that meet or exceed the security standards outlined in this article.

Before changing the settings on your router

  1. Back up your router’s settings, in case you need to restore them.
  2. Update the software on your devices. This is critical for ensuring your devices have the latest security updates and work the best they can with each other.
  3. On each device that had previously joined the network, you may need to forget the network to ensure the device uses the router’s new settings when rejoining the network.

Router settings

To ensure that your devices can connect securely and reliably to your network, apply these settings consistently to each Wi-Fi router and access point, and to each band of a dual-band, tri-band or other multi-band router.

Security

Set to WPA3 Personal for better security
Set to WPA2/WPA3 Transitional for compatibility with older devices

The security setting defines the type of authentication and encryption used by your router, and the level of privacy protection for data transmitted over its network. Whichever setting you choose, always set a strong password for joining the network.

  • WPA3 Personal is the newest, most secure protocol currently available for Wi-Fi devices. It works with all devices that support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), and some older devices too.
  • WPA2/WPA3 Transitional is a mixed mode that uses WPA3 Personal with devices that support that protocol, while allowing older devices to use WPA2 Personal (AES) instead.
  • WPA2 Personal (AES) is appropriate when you can’t use one of the more secure modes. In that case, also choose AES as the encryption or cipher type, if available.

Weak security settings to avoid on your router

Don’t create or join networks that use older, deprecated security protocols. These are no longer secure, they reduce network reliability and performance, and they will cause your device to display a security warning:

  • WPA/WPA2 mixed modes
  • WPA Personal
  • WEP, including WEP Open, WEP Shared, WEP Transitional Security Network or Dynamic WEP (WEP with 802.1X)
  • TKIP, including any security setting with TKIP in the name

Settings that turn off security, such as None, Open or Unsecured, are also strongly discouraged. Turning off security disables authentication and encryption and allows anyone to join your network, access its shared resources (including printers, computers and smart devices), use your Internet connection, and monitor the websites you visit and other data that’s transmitted over your network or Internet connection. This is a risk even if security has been turned off temporarily or for a guest network.

Network name (SSID)

Set to a single, unique name (case sensitive)

The Wi-Fi network name, or service set identifier (SSID), is the name your network uses to advertise its presence to other devices. It’s also the name that nearby users will see on their device’s list of available networks.

Use a name that’s unique to your network, and make sure all routers on your network use the same name for every band they support. For example, don’t use common names or default names, such as linksys, netgear, dlink, wireless or 2wire, and don’t give your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands different names.

If you don’t follow this guidance, your devices may not connect reliably to your network, to all of the routers on your network or to all of the available bands of your routers. And devices that join your network are more likely to encounter other networks that have the same name, and then automatically try to connect to them.

Hidden network

 Set to Disabled

A router can be configured to hide its network name, or SSID. Your router may incorrectly use “closed” to mean hidden, and “broadcast” to mean not hidden.

Hiding the network name doesn’t conceal the network from being detected or secure it against unauthorised access. And because of the way devices search for and connect to Wi-Fi networks, using a hidden network may expose information that can be used to identify you and the hidden networks you use, such as your home network. When connected to a hidden network, your device may display a privacy warning due to this privacy risk.

To secure access to your network, use the appropriate security setting instead.

MAC address filtering, authentication and access control

 Set to Disabled

When this feature is enabled, your router can be set up to only allow devices that have specified media access control (MAC) addresses to join the network. Reasons why you shouldn’t rely on this feature to prevent unauthorised access to your network:

To secure access to your network, use the appropriate security setting instead.

Automatic firmware updates

 Set to Enabled

If possible, set your router to install software and firmware updates automatically as they become available. Firmware updates can affect the security settings available to you, and they deliver other important improvements to the stability, performance and security of your router.

Radio mode

 Set to All (preferred), or Wi-Fi 2 to Wi-Fi 6 (802.11a/g/n/ac/ax)

These settings, available separately for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, control which versions of the Wi-Fi standard the router uses for wireless communication. Newer versions offer better performance and can support more devices concurrently.

It’s usually best to enable every mode that’s offered by your router, rather than a subset of these modes. All devices, including older devices, can then connect using the fastest radio mode they support. This also helps reduce interference from nearby legacy networks and devices.

Bands

Enable all bands that are supported by your router

A Wi-Fi band is like a road that data can flow down. More bands provide more data capacity and performance for your network.

Channel

 Set to Auto

Each band of your router is divided into multiple, independent communication channels, like different lanes on a road. When channel selection is set to automatic, your router will select the best Wi-Fi channel for you.

If your router doesn’t support automatic channel selection, choose whichever channel performs best in your network environment. That varies depending on the Wi-Fi interference in your network environment, which can include interference from any other routers and devices that are using the same channel. If you have multiple routers, configure each one to use a different channel, especially if they are close to each other.

Channel width

Set to 20 MHz for the 2.4 GHz band
Set to Auto orall widths (20 MHz, 40 MHz, 80 MHz) for the 5 GHz band

Channel width specifies the size of “pipe” available to transfer data. Wider channels are faster but more susceptible to interference, and also more likely to interfere with other devices.

  • 20 MHz for the 2.4 GHz band helps to avoid performance and reliability issues, especially near other Wi-Fi networks and 2.4 GHz devices, including Bluetooth devices.
  • Auto or all channel widths for the 5 GHz band ensures the best performance and compatibility with all devices. Wireless interference is less of a concern in the 5 GHz band.

DHCP

Set to Enabled, if your router is the only DHCP server on the network

Dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) assigns IP addresses to devices on your network. Each IP address identifies a device on the network and enables it to communicate with other devices on the network and Internet. A network device needs an IP address, much like a phone needs a phone number.

Your network should only have one DHCP server. If DHCP is enabled on more than one device, such as on both your cable modem and router, address conflicts may prevent some devices from connecting to the Internet or using network resources.

DHCP lease time

Set to 8 hours for home or office networks; 1 hour for hotspots or guest networks

DHCP lease time is the length of time that an IP address assigned to a device is reserved for that device.

Wi-Fi routers usually have a limited number of IP addresses they can assign to devices on the network. If that number is depleted, the router can’t assign IP addresses to new devices, and these devices can’t communicate with other devices on the network and Internet. Reducing DHCP lease time allows the router to reclaim and reassign old IP addresses that are no longer being used faster.

NAT

Set to Enabled, if your router is the only device providing NAT on the network

Network address translation (NAT) translates between addresses on the Internet and addresses on your network. NAT can be understood by imagining a company’s post room, where deliveries to employees at the company’s address are directed to employee offices within the building.

You should generally only enable NAT on your router. If NAT is enabled on more than one device, such as on both your cable modem and router, the resulting ”double NAT” may cause devices to lose access to certain resources on the network or Internet.

WMM

 Set to Enabled

WMM (Wi-Fi multimedia) prioritises network traffic to improve the performance of a variety of network applications, such as video and voice. All routers that support Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) or later should have WMM enabled by default. Disabling WMM can affect the performance and reliability of devices on the network.

Device features that can affect Wi-Fi connections

These features may affect how you set up your router or the devices that connect to it.

Location Services

Make sure your device has Location Services turned on for Wi-Fi networking, because regulations in each country or region define the Wi-Fi channels and wireless signal strength allowed there. Location Services helps to ensure your device can reliably see and connect to nearby devices, and that it performs well when using Wi-Fi or features that rely on Wi-Fi, such as AirPlay or AirDrop.

On your Mac:

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Security & Privacy.
  2. Click the lock  in the corner of the window, then enter your administrator password.
  3. In the Privacy tab, select Location Services, then select Enable Location Services.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the list of apps and services, then click the Details button next to System Services.
  5. Select Wi-Fi Networking, then click Done.

On your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch:

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
  2. Turn on Location Services.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the list, then tap System Services.
  4. Turn on Networking & Wireless (or Wi-Fi Networking).

Auto-Join when used with wireless network provider Wi-Fi networks

Wireless network provider Wi-Fi networks are public networks set up by your wireless network provider and their partners. Your iPhone or other Apple mobile device treats them as known networks and connects to them automatically.

If you see a ”Privacy Warning” under the name of your network provider’s network in Wi-Fi settings, your mobile identity could be exposed if your device were to join a malicious hotspot impersonating your network provider’s Wi-Fi network. To avoid this possibility, you can prevent your iPhone or iPad from automatically rejoining your network provider’s Wi-Fi network:

  1. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap  next to the wireless network provider’s network.
  3. Turn off Auto-Join.

The 7 Best Routers for VoIP SystemsThe 7 Best Routers for VoIP Systems

High-quality VoIP starts with a suitable router. Many businesses will implement a hosted VoIP solution and confirm with the VoIP provider that the router that already exists in their network, works with the VoIP service. Yet many businesses still end up frustrated with call quality, dropped connections and other problems associated with their VoIP service. And they may unfairly accuse the VoIP provider of subpar service. It’s not enough to just find out if your router will work with VoIP. Sure, it will work—VoIP is just another type of data traffic that a router passes in and out of your network. However, many routers, especially those designed for consumer networks, are not well optimized for VoIP, as a business may find out the hard way. When deploying mission-critical VoIP systems, consider a business-class router that is optimized for VoIP.

There are several features to look for in a router that will be used with a hosted VoIP solution. The most critical feature is robust QoS (Quality of Service). QoS allows for prioritizing VoIP traffic over other types of data traffic such as video, Instant Messaging, or FTP.

Mia Athawale, technical product manager for ABP Tech, provides an even more specific example of why QoS is critical, “A sync triggered for a Dropbox account could create a spike in bandwidth usage and cause existing VoIP calls to experience packet drop. Conventional QoS does not resolve the problem,” wrote Athawale in a blog post. Who would think that an application as innocuous as Dropbox could have such a negative impact on VoIP quality? Not many, which is why QoS is crucial.

If you take a look in the management interface of your router at home, there is a good chance you can find some settings related to VoIP. Consumer routers often have options for bandwidth prioritization or traffic shaping. You can enable these settings and specify that VoIP traffic takes priority over any other type of data traffic in the network. However, for VoIP in businesses, those consumer-level features may not be enough. In an email interview, Athawale also pointed out why many consumer routers simply aren’t sufficient for business applications. “A lot of routers claim to perform QoS, but most of them simply tag the packets, especially consumer routers,” said Athawale.

SMBs should take note of other important features a router should have when it comes to VoIP. VLAN support is one. With VLANs, you can have VoIP traffic isolated to specific devices or user groups and prioritized separately from other internal data traffic. WAN backup and load balancing are two other good features for VoIP but these feature are only available in devices with at last two WAN ports.

For VoIP use, you want a router that supports H.323 and SIP protocols as well. Finally, as with any tech device you may purchase, you want decent support options and warranties. Here are our picks of the current, top SMB routers for VoIP use:

1. DrayTek Vigor2925Vac
DrayTek’s Vigor2925Vac is not only a top-choice for SMB VoIP routers, it’s the only such router to include 802.11ac Wi-Fi. DrayTek partnered with ABP Tech to develop very extensive QoS for VoIP. Among the many VoIP-tailored features, the Vigor2925Vac can detect VoIP traffic (SIP and RTP media) and automatically give it first priority over other traffic. QoS is also combined with proactive bandwidth management, so when DrayTek routers detect a VoIP call, they reserve bandwidth for two more VoIP calls than the current number of calls. So bandwidth is allocated to VoIP dynamically, and is still available for other applications when there are no VoIP calls. Dual Gigabit Ethernet ports provide connection failover and load balancing.

Configurations are performed though a Web-based management interface that is designed to be intuitive enough for non-IT people to get the Vigor2925Vac up and running.

2. DrayTech Vigor2925Vn plus
The DrayTech Vigor2925Tn plus has all of the great features of the Vigor2925Vac, except it is also an 802.11n Wi-Fi router instead of an 11ac router. However, the Vigor2925Vn plus has even more enhanced feature for VoIP including the ability to connect to multiple SIP registrars with flexible configuration and call handling options, plus two FXS ports to connect analog telephones and an FXO port for a POTS line, A feature called Digit Map feature lets you set call rules for certain destinations to use either VoIP services or POTS lines (ideal for a Disaster Recovery strategy).

3. SonicWall TZ300 Series
SonicWall is synonymous with security. So it’s no surprise that a highlight of the T300 is that it’s a secured firewall appliance that has VoIP features integrated such as advanced bandwidth management. This all-in-one device also is an 802.11ac access point, and a UTM with intrusion protection, content filtering, application control and more.

4. Cisco Small Business RV320
Cisco’s Small Business RV320 router uses bandwidth efficiently with its baked-in bandwidth management QoS. The feature prioritizes network services including VoIP, by either rate controls or prioritization levels. This all-in-one device also offers content filtering, IPSec and SSL VPN, AES-256 encryption and an SPI firewall.

5. Adtran NetVanta 6355 IP Business Gateway
At a price of a little over $2,000, the Adtran NetVanta 6355 IP Business gateway is pricey for a small business, but you are guaranteed you are purchasing a device that is engineered for VoIP. The NetVanta 6366 is an integral SIP gateway as well as a 24-port PoE switch. It helps with VoIP performance with its standardized G.729a voice compression feature which reduces bandwidth on calls.

6. Adtran NetVanta 3120
For small businesses looking for a router that is built for VoIP but may not want to pay the price for the Adtran NetVanta 6355 IP Business Gateway, Adtran’s NetVnata 3120 is a good, affordable alternative. Designed for smaller network with DSL or cable broadband, the NetVanata 3120 offers advanced VoIP features. One, is QoS for VoIP delay-sensitive traffic. Another is Voice Quality Management (QVM). With QVM, you can capture jitter, delay, and packet loss statistics to troubleshoot VoIP calls.

7. Linksys WRT1900AC
If you are looking for a VoIP-capable router for a very small business with a budget that does not allow for much more than a consumer router, then look to the Linksys WRT1900ac. This Linksys router can be flashed with OpenWRT firmware. This firmware supports a number of open-source SIP packages including Asterisk.  It’s a low-cost way to get very granular control over VoIP in a network, if you don’t mind digging though some technical knowledge base articles and forums in the OpenWRT online community when you have questions or issues.

Global Internet Outage Affected Several Websites Including The British GovernmentGlobal Internet Outage Affected Several Websites Including The British Government

Global internet outage affected several websites including the British Government.

A major server issue that saw thousands of news, social media and government websites including Bloomberg and the New York Times crash today has been fixed. The issue was confirmed to be a glitch at US-based cloud computing services provider Fastly, who identified and fixed a major disruption issue.

Amazon, CNN, Reddit, the Guardian, the Independent, BBC News, the Spectator, the Financial Times and the UK government website were all down yesterday.

Other platforms were also in trouble.

Nearly 21,000 Reddit users also reported issues with the social media platform, while more than 2,000 reported problems with Amazon. All affected websites came back up after outages that ranged from a few minutes to around an hour.

Fastly which is one of the world’s most widely-used cloud-based content delivery network providers, the company earlier reported a disruption from a “service configuration” and did not explain.

The firm, which went public in 2019 and has a market capitalization of more than $5bn, helps websites move content using less-congested routes, enabling them to reach consumers faster.

Sergio Loureiro, Cloud Security Director at Outpost24 said:

“This global outage that affects many high-profile companies does highlight the dependency we have on cloud services and their availability,”.

“This directly impacts many businesses, including for example Reddit whose entire business is based around their website.”

The issue began shortly after 11am and was largely resolved by around midday.

“It is remarkable that within ten minutes, one outage can send the world into chaos,” said Mark Rodbert, CEO of Idax.

“This demonstrates the extent to which the move to the cloud has changed the things that companies need to protect.”

Fastly runs an “edge cloud” which is designed to speed up loading times for websites and help them deal with bursts of traffic.

What is a Dual-WAN Router?

Most people often tend to question, what is a dual WAN router? As the name suggests, it is a special type of router equipped with technology that allows it to run two different WAN networks at a time. Now, WAN stands for Wide Area network. It is the internet connection that your service provider provides you with. A dual WAN router allows you to have two different internet connections from two different service providers connected to a signal router, which then translates the radio signal into a wireless signal to create a WAN and allow you other devices to connect to the internet wirelessly.

Benefits and Uses of Multi-Wan Routers

When talking about dual WAN routers, you must wonder what benefits the equipment has to offer compared to a signal WAN router. Questions like, why should I invest in it, what uses and benefits it has to offer, or whether it is worth the investment or not might be an uprising in your mind.

Well, for starters, there is a reason dual WAN routers are becoming popular among both businesses and homeowners. Rationally speaking, it is for sure because they have a number of benefits to offer, which makes them worth the investment.

For instance, their main purpose is to allow you to run two different internet connections at a time via the same router. This means you will have one signal, but you can connect to either of the ISP and enjoy access to the internet.

Other than that, the advanced dual WAN routers come with a uniform balance handling mechanism as well. This means that they even use the bandwidth provided by both the ISP to ensure that you don’t run out of one in case the other one stops working due to maintenance issues from the ISP side.

It also comes with a network redundancy feature, which means that in case your one WAN link fails, you will still have access to the network using the second WAN link, which will keep you connected until the first WAN is operation again. One device, two services! Cool, right?

Most business owners think since setting up a dual WAN router is quite a complex task, so why not invest in two individual routers and have a different internet connection plugged in them. That would work, but that would require double the maintenance and, of course, double the initial buying or renting cost for your business to afford. Investing in a dual WAN router allows you to minimize your cost, and maintenance to a signal device is save hundreds of dollars.

Overall, investing in dual WAN routers increase your internet reliability, speed, security, and load balancing. In short, it simply enhances the performance of the router and gives it superpowers. So get yours now and enjoy uninterrupted access to the internet at all times.

FAQ’s

1. How dual WAN router works?

Dual WAN routers work in two different ways. The first mode is known as failover. This means that you will have two ISP connected to the router, and when one fails, the other jumps in to save the way. In short, it acts as the backup. The second mode is called the load balancing mode. In this mode, both the connections are used simultaneously based on the channel to bandwidth ratio to run side by side at the same time.

2. What is a Dual-WAN Router?

As the name suggests, a dual WAN router is a device that comes with two WAN ports that allow you to connect two different internet connections from two different ISP to your router. This ensures load balancing, fast, and reliable internet connection. In case one WAN goes down, the other steps in as a backup to provide uninterrupted experience.

3. How do I connect two WAN routers?

To connect two WAN routers, you need two Ethernet cables. Take the first Ethernet cable and plug on the end to the LAN port and the other to the first router. Now, take the second Ethernet cable and plug the LAN end in the port on the first router and the second end of the cable to the WAN port of the second router. This will allow you to build a LAN to WAN network using two routers.

4. Is WAN faster than LAN?

The reliability and speed of the WAN depend on the WAN service used, whereas the LAN depends on the router. Therefore, if you compare the transportation of the data packet between the two, then LAN is faster than WAN since it comes with a shorter distance and enhanced reliability.

5. What is dual-WAN load balancing?

Dual-WAN load balancing is a mechanism set in place within the dual WAN routers, which allow them to utilize bandwidth from the two WAN connections based on a specific channel to bandwidth ratio. It means that it runs both the connections simultaneously and avoids overloading on a single connection to enhance the performance and speed.

Final Words

Investing in a dual WAN router for your business or home allows you to stay connected with the internet even if one of your ISP goes down. Some businesses might not be affected by the downtime, but if you are an online business, a marketing agency, or a multi-service firm, then you can’t depend on one internet connection to provide its service 24/7. So getting two would help prevent downtime and the financial loss caused to the business because of it. So choose the one that best suits your needs and get it right away to enjoy fast, reliable, and advanced internet connection.

Government, news and commercial websites affected as Fastly outage causes large-scale global internet disruptionGovernment, news and commercial websites affected as Fastly outage causes large-scale global internet disruption

LONDON (AP) — Multiple websites went offline briefly across the globe Tuesday after an outage at the cloud service company Fastly, revealing how critical a handful of companies running the internet’s plumbing have become.

Dozens of sites including the New York Times, CNN, some Amazon sites, Twitch, Reddit, the Guardian, and the U.K. government’s home page, could not be reached.

In Asia, cities like Hong Kong and Singapore were also affected, with users unable to access the CNN website. In China, where most foreign media websites are blocked, there was little discussion on the outage on social media platforms such as Weibo.

San Francisco–based Fastly FSLY, +1.12% acknowledged a problem just before 6 a.m. Eastern. It said in repeated updates on its website that it was “continuing to investigate the issue.”

Market Pulse: Fastly stock takes a hit after outage but pares losses after ‘fix’ applied

About an hour later, the company said: “The issue has been identified and a fix has been applied. Customers may experience increased origin load as global services return.” A number of sites that were hit early appeared to be coming back online.

“ Internet traffic measurement by Kentik show that Fastly began to recover from the outage roughly an hour after it struck at midmorning European time — before most people in the U.S. were awake. ”

Fastly said it had identified a service configuration that triggered disruptions, meaning the outage appeared to be caused internally.

Still, all major futures markets in the U.S. dipped sharply minutes after the outage hit almost exactly a month after a cyberattack that caused the operator of the largest fuel pipeline in the U.S to halt its operations.

See: Outages hit major global websites including Amazon, CNN and Bloomberg

Internet traffic measurement by Kentik show that Fastly began to recover from the outage roughly an hour after it struck at midmorning European time — and before most Americans were awake.

“Looks like it is slowly coming back,” said Doug Madory, an internet infrastructure expert at Kentik. He said “it is serious because Fastly is one of the world’s biggest CDNs and this was a global outage.”

Fastly is a content-delivery network. It provides vital but behind-the-scenes cloud computing “edge servers” to many of the web’s popular sites. These servers store, or “cache,” content such as images and video in places around the world so they are closer to users, allowing them to fetch it more quickly and smoothly instead of having to access the site’s original server. Fastly says its services mean that a European user going to an American website can get the content from 200 to 500 milliseconds faster.

The impact of Fastly’s trouble highlights the relative fragility of the internet’s current architecture given its heavy reliance on Big Tech companies — such as Amazon’s AWS cloud services – as opposed to a more decentralized model.

“Even the biggest and most sophisticated companies experience outages. But they can also recover fairly quickly,” said Madory.

When the outage hit, some visitors trying to access CNN.com got a message that said: “Fastly error: unknown domain: cnn.com.” Attempts to access the Financial Times website turned up a similar message while visits to the New York Times and U.K. government’s gov.uk site returned an “Error 503 Service Unavailable” message, along with the line “Varnish cache server,” which is a technology that Fastly is built on.

Down Detector, which tracks internet outages, posted reports on dozens of sites going down and said “there may be a widespread outage at Fastly.”

Best 5G routerBest 5G router

Thanks to 5G, an exciting new alternative to traditional fibre home broadband is starting to emerge.

The next-generation mobile network known as 5G is not merely a super-fast way to get connected from your smartphone. It’s also being positioned as a viable means of connecting to the internet from your home.

In order to connect to 5G home broadband, you’ll need a 5G router. Here’s a run down of the current 5G router market in the UK, which includes the router you’ll almost certainly be getting if you sign up for a 5G home broadband contract.

What is a 5G router?

A 5G router is a plug-in device that enables you to access home broadband using a 5G signal rather than the telephone wiring that runs to your home.

With real world download speeds of between 100–250Mbps, 5G home broadband is already faster than standard fibre broadband where available. With peaks speeds exceeding 1.5Gbps in places, it could even potentially compete with top notch full fibre broadband.

5G also benefits from lower latency than 4G, which should in time make for a fixed broadband-like responsive online experience. In current real world terms, you can expect a ping of 35ms, which falls in between a decent home broadband connection (10–20ms) and a 4G broadband connection (50ms)

But perhaps the key benefit of using a 5G router right now is how quick and easy they are to set up. You can receive it in the post the very next day after you order, at which point you literally plug it in and access the internet. There’s no need to wait around for an engineer to visit.

Best 5G routers

Given the relatively new nature of 5G broadband, there aren’t an awful lot of options for 5G routers on the market. In fact, the UK’s three 5G broadband suppliers all offer the exact same 5G router option, albeit under different names. Thankfully, it’s a good one.

We’ll update this piece as more 5G router options become available.

UPDATE: As of early 2021 there have been reports of shortages of the Huawei 5G CPE Pro. At the time of writing, it was nowhere to be found on EE, and purchasing one outright through alternative means can be rather pricey. Our advice: either shop around with other networks, or await news of more stock (or a replacement) from EE.

Huawei 5G CPE Pro

Huawei 5G CPE Pro

The Huawei 5G CPE Pro is notable for being the 5G router that all three UK 5G broadband suppliers issue. Three calls it the Three 5G Hub, Vodafone the GigaCube, and EE the 5GEE Home Router. But it’s the exact same device in each instance.

This means that buying a 5G router in the UK is a bit of a no-brainer at the time of writing. The Huawei 5G CPE Pro is the 5G router you’ll be given as part of your 5G home broadband contract, stock permitting. Still, it’s good to know what you’re getting all the same.

The Huawei 5G CPE Pro router allows up to 64 devices to get online at once over a range of 100 metres, and also has two Gigabit ethernet ports, which are handy for console and PC gaming. It also offers support for download speeds of up to 2,330Mbps, which clearly isn’t attainable right now. But 5G is only predicted to get faster over time, and the Huawei 5G CPE Pro will be ready for it when it does.

Portable alternatives

Your choice of alternative 5G routers is extremely limited at the time of writing. There are a couple of interesting options if you want to be more flexible or mobile with your 5G broadband connectivity.

5GEE WiFi

The 5GEE WiFi is the latest mobile broadband device to be launched by EE.

EE’s device has a lot going for it with a massive 6,450mAh battery, a 30 metre WiFi-range and the ability to connect up to 64 devices at the same time. Impressively it also supports Wi-Fi 6, which is the very latest generation of Wi-Fi leading to improved efficiency and speeds when multiple devices are connected.

Theoretical maximum speeds of up to 2.33Gbps per second are supported, but currently you can expect average speeds of around 150Mbps.

Huawei 5G Pocket Hotspot Pro

Huawei 5G Pocket Hotspot Pro

If the HTC 5G Hub is just too unwieldy for you, and you need more mobility from your broadband connection, then the Huawei 5G Pocket Hotspot Pro could be a good choice.

Available through O2, the Huawei 5G Pocket Hotspot Pro is a tiny 280g device powered by an 8000mAh battery. It offers 5G download speeds of up to 1.65 Gbps, though again, you’ll likely be getting a tenth of that at best.

Elsewhere you get a USB type-A and a type-C port for wired charging, and that’s your lot for physical connections. This is as no-nonsense a 5G router as they come.

5G Pocket Hotspot deals

Best 4G routers

If you’re looking to set up a mobile home broadband service, but don’t live in a 5G area, there is another option. A 4G router will work in much the same way as a 5G router, but with lower download speeds and higher latency.

Three 4G Hub (B535)

You can pick up the Three 4G Hub on Three. It’s a Cat 7 that’s technically capable of download speeds of up to 300Mbps and upload speeds of up to 100Mbps, though you almost certainly won’t achieve anything like those speeds given the limitations of the modern 4G network.

Any such issues won’t be down to the router itself though, which is one of the most capable on the market. You can connect up to 64 devices simultaneously over Wi-Fi – the same as most 5G routers – and there are also four ethernet ports for wired connections and two sockets for hooking up a signal-boosting external antenna.

4GEE Home Router 2

EE offers the 4GEE Home Router 2, which matches the Huawei HomeFi Plus for speed. It’s another Cat 7 device, which means it can hit a theoretical 300Mbps download and 100Mbps upload.

Again, you won’t hit anything like those speeds in real life, but it’s worth noting that EE typically has the best all-round 4G performance in the UK. There’s support for up to 64 simultaneous connections and two SMA antenna sockets. You only get two ethernet ports, however, so if you’re fond of physical connections over Wi-Fi, it might not be the best choice.

FAQs

What are the benefits of 5G broadband?

Where available, 5G broadband offers download speeds that rival or exceed most UK fixed broadband packages. Despite this, it’s a lot easier to set-up, with no engineers required. You simply plug and play.

How fast is 5G broadband?

At the time of writing, real world download speeds for 5G broadband tend to fall between 100 and 250Mbps, which is faster than most regular broadband packages. Peak speeds have been recorded of around 1.5Gbps in certain places, however, which rivals the fastest full fibre broadband services available in the UK.

How responsive is 5G broadband?

At the time of writing, you can expect to achieve a latency of around 35ms. That’s more/worse than traditional home broadband’s 10–20ms, and less/better than 4G broadband’s 50ms. You can expect this to improve over time, and it should ultimately rival the latency of full fibre broadband.

Why aren’t there many 5G routers on the market?

5G is still in its infancy, particularly here in the UK. Only three operators are offering 5G broadband packages, and only in a relatively small percentage of the country.

Because of this, there isn’t an abundance of 5G router options available, and all three have gone with the same base unit. This will undoubtedly improve over time as 5G broadband becomes more popular.

Do I need a 5G router or a 4G router?

5G broadband is much faster and more responsive than 4G broadband, and that gap is going to increase exponentially over the coming years. You should got with a 5G router if at all possible.

There are only two reasons you should actively choose a 4G router over a 5G router: budget and availability. It’s early days for 5G connectivity in the UK, and it’s neither widely available nor particularly cheap to get set up with a 5G broadband package.

Websites back online after Fastly-linked glitch takes down internetWebsites back online after Fastly-linked glitch takes down internet

June 8 (Reuters) – Thousands of government, news and social media websites across the globe were coming back online on Tuesday after getting hit by a widespread hour-long outage linked to U.S.-based cloud company Fastly Inc (FSLY.N).

High-traffic sites including Reddit, Amazon, CNN, PayPal, Spotify, Al Jazeera Media Network and the New York Times went down, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com. They came back after outages that ranged from a few minutes to around an hour early in the morning in the United States but middle of the day in Europe.

“Our global network is coming back online,” Fastly said.

One of the world’s most widely-used cloud-based content delivery network providers, the company earlier reported a disruption from a “service configuration” and did not explain.

“Incidents like this underline the fragility of the internet and its dependence on a patchwork of fragmented technology. Ironically, this also underlines its inherent strength and how quickly it can recover,” Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, said.

“The fact that an outage like this can grab headlines around the world shows how rare it is.”

Typical service configurations for a cloud service provider can include updating security rules to protect information, or instructing a server to refresh the contents of a news site before serving it to a customer, said Andy Champagne, senior vice president at Akamai, a cloud service company.

A simple typo can be propagated to thousands of servers and cause disruptions, he said.

Fastly, which went public in 2019 and has a market capitalization of under $6 billion, is far smaller than peers like Amazon’s AWS. The company’s content delivery network (CDN) helps websites move content using less-congested routes, enabling them to reach consumers faster.

“In the grand scheme of things, we actually think that this is a little bit of a positive for other CDNs and also just shows how difficult managing a CDN can be,” said James Fish, analyst at Piper Sandler & Co.

Apart from Fastly, the other main CDN providers include Akamai Technologies, Cloudera and AWS.

“It certainly reminds us just how crucial so few sites and services are to our digital lives,” said Neil Campling, global TMT analyst at Mirabaud Securities.

Users received error messages quickly when they visited affected websites on Tuesday, which is an indication Fastly was not a victim of a DDoS attack, or a type of cyber-attack in which a bad actor overwhelms a network with a flood of internet traffic, Champagne said.

The United Kingdom’s attorney general earlier tweeted that the country’s main gov.uk website was down, providing an email for queries.

The disruption may have caused issues for citizens booking COVID-19 vaccinations or reporting test results, the Financial Times reported.

Websites operated by news outlets including the Financial Times, the Guardian and Bloomberg News also faced outages.

Many of the websites affected earn revenue from digital advertising. Worldwide, websites lost over $29 million in digital ad revenue per hour during the outage, according to back-of-the-envelope estimates from media measurement firm Kantar.

News publishers came up with inventive workarounds to report about the outage when their websites failed to load.

Popular tech website the Verge used Google Docs to report news, while UK Technology Editor at the Guardian started a Twitter thread to report on the problems.

At the onset of the outage, nearly 21,000 Reddit users reported issues with the social media platform, while more than 2,000 users reported problems with Amazon, according to Downdetector.com.

Twitter users quickly reacted to the outage, creating the #InternetShutdown hashtag with KITKAT’s official handle telling its 441,500 followers “Guess it’s time to Have A Break.”

“We were offline for a few minutes because the whole internet broke down,” tweeted Jitse Groen, chief executive of food delivery group Just Eat Takeaway.com.

Shares of New York-listed Fastly were up 7.7% after being down nearly 4% in pre-market trading.

International news sites crash in major internet outageInternational news sites crash in major internet outage

Access to news websites and social forums across the world has been restored, after a major outage hit dozens of popular websites on Tuesday night for over an hour.

Visitors to The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian Financial Review, The Guardian and the BBC received error messages when trying to access the sites from about 8pm on Tuesday.

Reddit, Twitch and Pinterest also went down, in addition to CNN, The New York Times and the UK government’s home page.

Technology teams for Nine publications, including this masthead, confirmed that the issue was linked to content delivery network (CDN) vendor Fastly.

CDNs are distribution networks that allow for the very quick flow of digital information between internet servers.

The servers are located in data centres across the globe that are connected by underwater cables.

Fastly is one of four hosting service providers that look after CDNs, the other three are Akamai, Cloudflare and Amazon Web Services.

At 10.57am UTC (8.57pm AEST) on June 8, Fastly confirmed the issue had been identified and fixed.

What is Fastly, and how did it break the internet this morning? What is Fastly, and how did it break the internet this morning?

Early Tuesday morning, internet users woke up to a broken internet. Major websites like Amazon and Reddit and news websites like the New York Times experienced outages. The reason for the mass-outage was issues with cloud platform provider Fastly.

Featured Video Hide

Users first began seeing outages early Tuesday morning, but Fastly said the incident was “resolved” around 6am CT.

But what is Fastly and what happened to cause such a widespread outage online?

What is Fastly?

Fastly is a cloud service company based in San Francisco. Essentially, the company works behind the scenes with popular websites by offering a content delivery network (CDN).

The CDN uses “strategically distributed” data centers, or points of presence (POP), to help websites and apps load faster by making the distance between users and servers smaller.

Fastly lists a number of high-profile companies as clients including: BuzzFeed, Financial Times, Kayak, GitHub, FourSquare, the Guardian, Yelp, and more.

The outage

Internet users began spotting outages across the web early Tuesday morning, specifically seeing 503 errors.

A 503 error indicates that a server is not ready to handle a request, as Mozilla explains, and “common causes are a server that is down for maintenance or that is overloaded.”

Downdetector, a website where people can report outages online, shows a spike in reported outages on a number of websites all around the same time.

A screenshot of Downdetector.com showing a spike in internet outage reports on Tuesday. The screenshot also includes reports of Fastly being down.A screenshot of Downdetector.com showing a spike in internet outage reports on Tuesday. The outage touched a number of high-profile websites, which reportedly included: Amazon, eBay, Twitch, Hulu, HBO Max, Reddit, the New York Times, CNN, the Guardian, and even the website for the British government.

Around 5am CT, Fastly posted on its website that it was “investigating potential impact to performance with our CDN services.”

Fastly’s status page updated consistently over the hour to note that it was investigating the issue, before identifying the problem after roughly 45 minutes.

On Tuesday morning around 6am CT, Fastly tweeted that it had identified a “service configuration that triggered disruptions across our POPs globally and have disabled that configuration.”

Ultimately, the outage lasted for roughly an hour.
